A total of 23 teams took part in the annual Mens Health “Battle of the Sexes” quiz in the Stornoway Golf Club on Friday 14th November, with the theme this year being Bowel Cancer and information available on every table to help them answer the health round.

All apart from 1 team answered all questions correctly and are now aware of the age for screening, signs and symptoms, the fact that bowel cancer is more common in men, how often the tests are carried out and how many samples they need to collect.

Further questions were asked to see how many of those attending were over 50 and off those how many have carried out a screening test. Out of the 90 who attended, 25 were over 50 and of those 23 have carried out the screening test, 2 have only just turned 50 and 1 hasnt done the test.  This was very encouraging and Norrie MacDonald who was M.C. for the night raised awareness of the importance of carrying out the test and encouraged everyone to continue taking the test.

For the first year we had a female team leading the way for most of the quiz. This was the first time the “Dolly Mixtures” had taken part in the quiz and finished off just 8 points below the winners who were “The Real Golf Club Continuing”.

A fantastic £225 was raised and this will be donated to the Hebridean Mens Cancer Support Group.
