Cervical Cancer Awareness Week Reminder

As we approach the end of Cervical Cancer Awareness Week (January 21st-27th) we would like to remind women that if they are late attending a screening appointment, or if it is your first visit, you can get more information about cervical screening from www.jostrust.org.uk

Mairi Campbell, Practice Nurse at Barra Medical Practice, said: “Practice nurses and GPs regularly participate in cervical screening tests and are therefore very skilled and knowledgeable. And practice nurses and doctors are happy to chat with anyone who may have questions before they attend. Please just get in touch with your GP practice – we want women to come to us, it saves lives.”

Cervical Cancer Awareness Week (21st-27th January)

Every year in the UK over 3,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women aged 35 and under, although it is important for anyone invited to attend their cervical screening appointment.

If you are late or worried about attending a cervical screening appointment, or if it is your first time, read more about cervical screening here:www.jostrust.org.uk/about-cervical-cancer/cervical-screening

Cervical screening saves lives – contact your GP practice to make an appointment.

Be Active. Stay Safe. Be Seen

At this time of year it can be easy to call-off outdoor exercise plans and think “I’ll wait until the weather improves in spring”.  However, we live in the Outer Hebrides; we know we can have four seasons in one day in June and glorious sunshine in November, so let’s get out there – but stay safe and be seen.

NHS Western Isles’ Health Promotion department, in partnership with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Sport & Health Section and the Lewis & Harris and Uist and Barra Sports Councils, are offering walkers, runners and cyclists free hi-vis armbands to support them to stay safe and be seen. Vitamin D animation: Everyone in the UK needs Vitamin D

A new animated short film has been launched to raise awareness of the importance of Vitamin D. Produced in a ‘whiteboard’ style, the animation provides viewers with an entertaining and informative story about Vitamin D; how it benefits our health and the ways in which we can obtain it.

The animation, developed by the Western Isles Maternal Infant and Nutrition (MIN) group, complements the three light-hearted and humorous Vitamin D films from 2016, which featured local children and adults from the Butt to Barra.  The animation can be viewed at: https://vimeo.com/296374851

Narrated by Dr Benjamin Jacobs, Consultant Paediatrician at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, the animation continues NHS Western Isles’ efforts in promoting supplementation of Vitamin D, particularly for mums-to-be, babies and children across the Western Isles, which is a priority of the MIN group.
